A Review on Cold Steel Spartan Vs Cold Steel Rajah3 III

Cold Steel Spartan

Both the Spartan and Rajah 3 are aggressive outdoor knives. The Spartan is a very rugged knife, though, and is a phenomenal outdoor knife. It would be an excellent knife for a bug-out bag or for camping. For city use, you would do well to have a Spartan in your tool kit, the trunk of your car or even yard work.

The Rajahs also fit these uses. Both the Rajahs and Spartan are aggressive cutters and any carpet layer should probably have two of each. And the Spartan is the ideal carpet cutting tool, as the blade is sharp and tough and the handle extraordinarily secure, plus it protects the hand at whatever angle you're cutting at.

Both Spartan and Rajah hollow ground from Japanese AUS 8A stainless and has some similarities with a Kukri. Like the Kukri, the Spartan™ always presents its edge at an angle to the material being cut to produce a deep sheering effect. However, since its point is narrower and more acute than most Kukri blades, it stabs almost as well as it cuts. The Spartan™ also echoes the ancient Kopis in its handle. It's designed to help the hand resist the pull of centrifugal force and to retard forward momentum, when stabbing, or backward movement, when hammering or smashing with its pommel. Injection molded out of Grivory with steel liners for strength, it’s heavily contoured for comfort and features irregular fluting and a heavily textured surface finish for an exceptionally effective grip.

The Spartan™ has dual pocket clips to assure ambidextrous carry and for quick draw opening, it features a thumb plate that can be used to open the knife like a conventional "one handed opener" or be snagged on the edge of a pocket during the draw stroke and opened automatically. Additionally, the Spartan™ incorporates our Tri-Ad™ locking mechanism, which has proven, under torture testing to be almost impervious to stress, strain and shock. It's almost impossible to overcome and offers a huge margin of safety not found in our competitor’s folders.

Cold Steel Rajah III

The Rajah III is basically a scaled down, more pocket friendly, version of its big brother. Designed by Andrew Demko, it shares almost all the major features of the Rajah II & Spartan including an AUS 8A stainless blade, Tri-Ad™ lock, thumb plate opener, ambidextrous pocket clips, and a Grivory handle with steel liners for extra strength and rigidity. The Rajah III’s handle offers a number of grip options due to its carefully sculptured shape and cross section and is particularly well suited to the reverse grip thanks to a unique thumb shelf built into the butt.

Conclusion

CS Spartan

Specification

Blade Thickness: 4 mm
Overall Length:10 1/2"
Steel: Japanese Aus 8A Stainless
Weight:9.2 oz
Handle:6" Long Grivory w/ Steel Liners
Pocket Clip: Stainless Pocket / Belt Clip

It is a good knife and well built but not without its flaws. Honestly I don’t really like it as an EDC tool but must admit it is a formidable self defense tool.

CS Spartan-The Good

Very solidly built
The lock has amazing strength and zero play
Good self defense tool
Excellent feel in the hand
Can be used as an impact weapon for non lethal use
Opens extremely fast once you get familiar with it
Despite being large carries very nicely due to the high clip placement

CS Spartan-The Bad

Not practical for EDC, draws to much attention when in use
Curved blade is not practical for any type of intricate use
Might be seen as a “weapon” by under informed LEOs
Doesn’t open easily with one had, need to flick or pocket draw

CS Rajah 3

Specifications:
Blade Length: 3 1/2"
Blade Thickness: 4 mm
Overall Length:8 3/8"
Steel: Japanese AUS 8A Stainless (Bead Blast Finish)
Weight: 4.4 oz
Handle: 4 7/8" Long Griv-Ex™
Pocket Clip: Stainless Pocket / Belt Clip

CS Rajah 3-The Good

If you are looking for something that is lighter, robust and sharp, grivory injection molded handle, reasonable size blade (not too small) for everyday use with affordable price. In an emergency all you have to do is grab it and open it in the conventional manner or snag its unique thumb plate on the edge of a pocket and snap it open. The rajah III looks to be more of a EDC personally.

CS Rajah 3-The Bad

As a camping/trail knife it's just too short, a bit too chunky and slow to get moving For that size and weight most people would want a longer blade and quicker action. The Rajah 3 is too short to chop, and it's difficult to see where one might utilize the knife's great strength.
