CRKT and knife designer Ken Onion's first collaboration together is the Ripple K405 folding knife series. This knife is noteworthy for its exceptional manufacturing quality, premium stainless steel build, plus an almost unbelievable silky smooth and fast opening action thanks to the use of the IKBS internal knife ball-bearing system.

The modified drop point blade has a high hollow grind, swedged top edge, and a high satin finish. Steel is premium Acuto, stainless, noted for its high chromium and molybdenum content and hardness of 59-60 HRC. It is instantly opened by pressing the blade flipper with either hand. For safety while closed, the blade has a ball detent.

Even the best conventional blade pivot bearings have some degree of friction which resists initial movement, or "stiction." In contrast, the Ripple blade opening action is almost friction-free due to the IKBS ball-bearing system. This innovative and simple design places eight uncaged ball bearings on each side of the blade pivot in races which are machined into the stainless steel handle. It is compact and adjustable at the blade pivot screw if ever needed. Not only is opening and closing exceptionally smooth, the IKBS system is durable and requires little maintenance, and yields a folder with great rigidity and no blade play.

The Ripple K405 model is an open build frame lock knife with stainless steel frames. In typical Ken Onion attention to detail, the frame lock does not create an unsightly gap in the right frame, but its cut is neatly integrated into the grip design of the frame, which is CNC machined with a complex "ripple" textured pattern plus 44 small lightening holes. James Williams is actively involved in teaching Military special operations and government security professionals who must at times perform their daily high-risk duties in environments which do not allow them to carry firearms or a large fixed blade knife such as the Hissatsu™. At training sessions and demonstrations, they have asked James to design a folder with the defensive power of the Hissatsu that can be a concealed carry in a pocket or clipped comfortably under a jacket. Fiskars 7550 hatchet is used primarily for splitting kindling and it works great but over the years we've used it for a variety of different household chores. Sure, you could use a larger splitting axe like the Fiskars X27 to split kindling, but the smaller frame and lightweight hatchet is a lot easier.

Keep It Sharp

The task for the designer was to create a knife taking into consideration the direct recognition of the assault rifle AK-47. As manufacturing method CNC-milling was preferred to pressure-casting to ensure the highest possible degree of precision. The handle of the Kalashnikov knife is made of hard-coat anodized 6061-T6 aluminum. A liner lock secures the blade in the open position. The handle inlays show the same contour as the forward hand grip of the assault rifle AK-47. Depending on the model they are made of G-10 or cocobolo wood. Inlays are only found on the front side. On the back side the pocket clip is mounted. The most significant recognition item is the blade which corresponds to the bayonet blade of the AK-47. Blade material is 440C stainless steel. Descriptions:
A Composite Blade combines two steels in one blade and enables us to put each steel to work doing what it does best. In this case, we put high-performance Sandvik 14C28N stainless on the spine and most of the blade. With increased nitrogen in the formula, 14C28N provides both good corrosion resistance and high hardness. The cutting edge is high-carbon high-chromium D2 steel. It’s only slightly stain resistant but it provides the razor edge and the easy re-sharpening of high-carbon steel. In time, expect a patina to develop along the edge, which will help protect against corrosion.

Although the JYD II is a big knife, it’s not too heavy and many people like it for every day carrying. The textured G-10 handles provide a non-slip grip, while the handle design keeps your hand in a great cutting position so cutting is always controlled and confident. The JYD II is a manual opening knife with a flipper that lets you open it easily left or right-handed with a pull back on the flipper and a roll of your wrist.
